For ever I will sing the goodness of the Lord. — Psalm 89:2
Mass readings: Acts 13:13-25 / John 13:16-20
In Catholic high school, Sister Aquinas taught us the biblical passages that prove Jesus is God. We were meant to use these in hypothetical faith-defending discussions with atheists. Not only did I never encounter one of those discussions, I forgot all the proofs. Until today. In John’s Gospel, we hear Jesus declare Himself as “I AM.” The present tense implies He has no past, no future. He IS eternal God.
Scientists proffer their Big Bang theories and we can counter there must be a Prime Mover, an eternal creator, an I AM, yet we humans have no practical experience of eternity. (Perhaps, the closest we come is sitting through an interminable root canal or an everlasting stint at the bus stop in a blizzard.) Jesus promised us eternal life. We need to review our lessons.
Prayer: Eternal God, continue to lead us to the life You’ve promised us.
