Let all the earth cry out to God with joy. — Psalm 66:1
Mass readings: Acts 8:1-8 / John 6:35-40
Socrates once said, “Beware the barrenness of a busy life.” Isn’t that a marvelous indictment of contemporary society? Soccer moms haul their children from piano lessons to play dates to karate class. Business people sprint to the commuter train, check text messages, hold meetings. College kids run to class, work a part-time job, pull all-nighters. Can everyone just slow down?
Jesus rebukes His followers in today’s Gospel when He says “although you have seen, you do not believe.” Belief can take time, dedication, and concentration. It can’t be accomplished on the run. What is there amid the “busy-ness” of our lives that we’re failing to notice?
Prayer: Lord God, keep us from busy, barren lives.
