Lord, you will show us the path of life. — Psalm 16:11
Mass readings: Acts 2:14, 22-33 / 1 Peter 1:17-21 / Luke 24:13-35
Today is Mother’s Day. It also would have been my grandparents’ 100th wedding anniversary. There’s a connection between the two special occasions as Grandma was the quintessential homemaker and mom, who devoted her time to raising my mother, their only child. My parents, sister, and I lived with Grandma and Grandpa for a few years, and my dominant memory is that of a box kept on their closet floor. It contained $10,000 — in cash.
Having endured the Great Depression, they swore never again to be in need and so Grandpa usually stayed home to guard the nest egg, missing every First Communion, Confirmation, and graduation. I hope that, unlike the two men on the road to Emmaus in today’s Gospel, my grandparents’ eyes weren’t prevented from seeing what was truly important.
Prayer: Blessed Mary, guard and guide all women who nurture others.
