May 1, Divine Mercy Sunday

Give thanks to the Lord for he is good, his love is everlasting. — Psalm 118:1

Mass readings: Acts 2:42-47 / 1 Peter 1:3-9 / John 20:19-31

On Today’s Agenda

Every 30 days I check my calendar of upcoming events and make a note of what greeting cards to buy and meetings to plan. Perhaps it is human nature to spend more time anticipating the future than experiencing the present. Even as a Girl Scout, our motto of “Be prepared” prompted me to be at the ready. I was never quite sure for what I should be ready but, as a naïve 10-year-old, I was confident I could handle whatever arose.

And so I begin “Mary’s month,” but unlike my calendar filled with mundane events, Mary’s was uncluttered. The angel Gabriel had announced her lifelong agenda: do Gods’ will. We can only be awestruck by the question: How did she prepare to become the mother of God?

Prayer: Blessed Mother, help us savor this day and trust God’s will for tomorrow.
