April 30, Saturday in the Octave of Easter

I will give thanks to you, for you have answered me. — Psalm 118:21

Mass readings: Acts 4:13-21 / Mark 16:9-15

Just Folks . . . and Saints

Since Monday, the first readings have been from Acts, telling the story of those very early days of the Church beginning with Pentecost. Today Luke, the author of Acts, has a wonderful description of Peter and John: “uneducated, ordinary men.” At least, that’s how the Jewish leaders perceived them.

It’s comforting to be reminded that God chooses and uses folks who are “just folks.” He chooses you for this and me for that, and He offers us everything we need to get the job done. What is our job? Each is unique but, at the same time, each is the same. In a word, it’s sainthood. We ordinary people are called to be His saints, and there’s no good excuse for us not becoming just that.

Prayer: Saints in heaven, help me!
