The Lord remembers his covenant for ever. — Psalm 105:8
Mass readings: Genesis 17:3-9 / John 8:51-59
When I ran a weekend retreat program for teens I quickly learned to repeat every direction I gave. “Now we’re going to head over to the church. We’ll be heading over to the church now.” One time a boy asked me why I did that. I told him, “I think you’re the only one who ever noticed.” That was why. If they didn’t catch it the first time, they might the second.
Jesus seems to be repeating himself in these recent readings when He talks about life and death and eternal life. Like any good teacher, this rabbi wants His students to be prepared for what’s coming and to understand what it means. The cross is confusing for us. How much more so it must have been for those early disciples.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, help me be a good student of Yours.
