Ordinary Isn’t Worthless 

Reading about Naaman’s healing from leprosy in today’s liturgy, I was struck by the star-studded cast: Naaman himself, a distinguished army commander; the King of Aram; the king of Israel; and the prophet Elisha to whom Naaman was sent for the cure. For the most part, however, the big names weren’t key players in the unfolding drama. God chose, instead, ordinary avenues to achieve results. An unnamed girl, the servant of Naaman’s wife, got the ball rolling by suggesting Naaman go to Elisha. Elisha instructed Naaman to bathe in the Jordan, in ordinary river water, to be healed. Naaman balked angrily at the commonplace solution, but his servants (ordinary, unnamed men) reasoned with him and convinced him to obey. 

Such hopefulness for us ordinary folks through whom God can perform extraordinary wonders!

Prayer: Lord, help me recognize the potential power in all the ordinary facets of life!
