The heart of the just one is firm, trusting in the Lord. — Psalm 112:(see 7)
Mass Readings: Tobit 2:9-14 / Mark 12:13-17
Today’s first reading shows a different Tobit. After suffering from eye problems for four years, the long-term effects take their toll and Tobit’s merciful spirit degenerates to irritability. “Where are your charitable deeds now?” his wife asks.
This story from antiquity reminded me of a contemporary tale of a well-loved preacher who suffered devastating injuries in a car crash and was confined to the hospital for months. Accustomed to frequently visiting the bedsides of the sick, he was now the patient and he bristled at the role reversal. Eventually, he realized God was teaching him humility. Once strong and in control, he developed newfound compassion for the weak and learned to receive as graciously as he’d given.
Prayer: Lord, when life throws me on my back, help me learn from those hard knocks.
