Guide me, Lord, in the way of your commands. — Psalm 119: 35
Mass Readings: Sirach 6:5-17 / Mark 10:1-12
Under the Mosaic Law, divorce was sometimes tolerated. But in today’s Gospel, Jesus is quick to point out that this was never God’s original intention, merely a concession to the hardness of human hearts. As author C. S. Lewis cautions, “Do not let us mistake necessary evils for good.”
Little children test their parents, trying to see how far they can push the boundaries and get away with it. Children of God shouldn’t mirror such attitudes. Instead, let’s constantly strive to conform more faithfully to God’s will. The question to ask, then, is not so much “Is this wrong?” but rather, “Does this please God?” Let’s seek God’s grace and wisdom to act in such a way that we can affirm, like Jesus, “I always do what is pleasing to him” (Jn 8:29).
Prayer: Lord of Love, help married couples deepen their commitment to You and to one another
