January 27, Thursday Weekday

Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face. — Psalm 24:(see 6)

Mass Readings: Hebrews 10:19-25 / Mark 4:21-25

Stick to It

One summer I went out for my high school football team. I had never played and I wasn’t much of an athlete, but I was big kid and I thought I’d give it a try. I quit after a week of summer practice. Years later I decided to train for a 10-kilometer run. I hated the training at first, but I stuck with it and actually grew to enjoy it. I ran the race.

Athletic trainers, take note of this verse from Hebrews in today’s reading: “You need endurance to do the will of God and receive what he has promised” (10:36). That’s true for physical conditioning, and it’s true for just about everything else of lasting value. The essential virtue is endurance. Persist, and you’ll reap the rewards.

Prayer: Jesus, make me strong. Give me the grace to be faithful when times are hard.
