The Lord hears the cry of the poor. — Psalm 34:7
Mass reading: Zephaniah 3:1-2,9-13 / Matthew 21:28-32
John of the Cross is one of the classical authors on the life of prayer. We often think of prayers as something we say or do, rather than as a relationship, a deep intimate sharing of hearts with our Lord. Silence and listening are important elements.
My image of prayer has come to be a scene of my parents in their old age, sitting together on the porch swing looking out at the lawn. Occasionally they would share some story, recall some event, savoring the quiet presence of the other. John of the Cross says: “For contemplation is nothing else than a secret and peaceful and loving inflow of God, which, if not hampered, fires the soul in the spirit of love.”
Prayer: Lord, help me be still and know that You are God.
