The Lord comes to judge the earth. — Psalm 96:13
Mass reading: Revelation 14:14-19 / Luke 21:5-11
In today’s readings, we hear about end times in somewhat graphic terms. Wars, famines, plagues, earthquakes, and — in Revelation — blood to the height of a horse’s bridle. People back then thought that surely the end must be near. But we humans forget that “near” in our world pales in comparison to what “near” must mean in the eternal world. We are but a second in time in the eons of human history.
And yet, we have to live our lives as if the end could come at any moment, always ready to face our Creator. It can be hard to live like we’re dying on a daily basis. It may be a cliché, but what would we do, how would we treat people today, if we knew this really was the last day?
Prayer: Eternal God, help me to live each day, each moment for You.
