Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob. — Psalm 146:5
Mass reading: Philemon 7-20 / Luke 17:20-25
How often do we veer off course, convinced that the thing we’re seeking to make us whole can be found in something we haven’t yet achieved or attained: a new wardrobe, a better job, a bigger house, a wide-screen TV. In today’s Gospel, Jesus reminds us that we shouldn’t “run in pursuit” every time someone points us in a new direction. The kingdom we seek is right here among us.
Where do we seek the kingdom? Is it in the transitory things of this life that pass before us like blips of light on a radar screen? There one minute, gone the next. Or do we recognize the kingdom for what it is? Jesus behind us, Jesus before us, Jesus next to us always.
Prayer: Dear Jesus, You are the One I am seeking. Help me to stay on course.
