October 15, St. Teresa of Jesus

Blessed the people the Lord has chosen to be his own. — Psalm 33:12

Mass Readings: Ephesians 1:11-14 / Luke 12:1-7

St. Teresa’s Sense of Humor

“ God deliver us from sullen saints,” said St. Teresa of Avila whose feast we celebrate today. Patron saint of Spain, Doctor of the Church, reformer and author, she was a remarkable genius. It’s said she taught her nuns to dance in the cloister. Obviously, joy was a high priority as she traipsed around Spain from convent to convent.

Ordinary folks like myself, coping with the trials of everyday life, might apply Teresa’s sense of humor. Perhaps it was her means of survival and endurance. It can be that for us, too. Laughter is balm for the soul and can ease tension. I think I’ll memorize a good joke today.

Prayer: Lord, help us to serve You with a spirit of joy.
