September 30, St. Jerome

I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living. — Psalm 27:13

Mass Readings: Job 19:21-27 / Luke 10:1-12

The Harvest

My son, Kevin, was confirmed this year. At the Mass, as parents and those being confirmed held their breath, the bishop selected several students to question. But he let them off easy. He prefaced each question with the answer: “Now, if I were to ask you . . . you would say . . . right?” Later, he grew more serious. He asked them to carry their faith with them throughout their life, in good times and bad.

In today’s Gospel Jesus dispatches His disciples and remarks that the harvest is plentiful but the laborers few. As adult Christians, God calls us to be a witness to the Gospel. Our particular road may be hard but God will give us the strength we need to be, and remain, one of His faithful laborers.

Prayer: Lord, help me stay true to my faith no matter how hard my life becomes.
