September 19, Twenty-Fifth Sunday

Praise the Lord, who lifts up the poor. — Psalm 113:(see 1 and 7)

Mass Readings: Amos 8:4-7 / 1 Timothy 2:1-8 / Luke 16:1-13 or 16:10-13

God and Justice

Our children expect good deeds to be rewarded and wrongdoing to be punished (especially if a sibling is the wrongdoer!). We adults are the same way. “There is no justice” is a common complaint. We cringe when nice people we know suffer one calamity after another. We’re offended that people who seem to care little about others prosper.

In today’s Gospel Jesus tells the Parable of the Unjust Steward. The unscrupulous man gains from worldly things he doesn’t even own. But Jesus’ message is for His followers, urging them to be just as dilignet seeking spiritual gain. We fret about others getting ahead yet fail to tend to our own soul. We have all we need because God is on our side and in our corner.

Prayer: Jesus, help me tend to my own spiritual garden.
