September 15, Our Lady of Sorrows

Save me, O Lord, in your kindness. — Psalm 31:17

Mass Readings: 1 Corinthians 12:31—13:13 / John 19:25-27 or Luke 2:33-35

Love and Marriage

Fifteen years ago I stood in front of family and friends, took the hand of my bride, and said the vows of marriage. Boy, was I naïve. Our priest told the congregation that love is not a feeling but an action — building a relationship day after day despite setbacks and disappointments. Boy, was he right. Marriage is wonderful but it’s not as often imagined when younger: “Once I meet the one I love, it’s all gravy.” Once married, you have to try to see yourself for who you are and love your wife for who she is.

In today’s reading Paul memorably declares that love is patient and love is kind. Love never fails, he says. Life is often hard, but Paul understood that love conquers all.

Prayer: Lord, let love for others guide my thoughts and actions.
