September 3, St. Gregory the Great

The salvation of the just comes from the Lord. — Psalm 37:39

Answering the Call 

His epic life was full of Hollywood-like dramatic twists and turns. The son of a Roman senator, Gregory followed in his father’s footsteps and became mayor of imperial Rome in the sixth century. But he gave away his vast wealth and, determined to lead a life of quiet prayer, withdrew to a monastery. Then the pope, recognizing his leadership skills, pressed him into his service as a papal legate. Later, the monk who wished to remain in the shadows was elected pope, promoted sacred music (“Gregorian chant”), oversaw the conversion of Britain to Christianity, and regularly fed the poor. 

Today we celebrate the feast of St. Gregory the Great, who followed God’s will through all its twists and turns as it led him to his heavenly home.
