July 29, St. Martha

I will bless the Lord at all times. — Psalm 34:2

Mass Readings: Jeremiah 18:1-6 / John 11:19-27 or Luke 10:38-42

Believing is Seeing

W hen my pastor used the theme of “Believing is Seeing” in a homily, I knew I had to work that phrase into one of these July meditations. He used the phrase for another Gospel passage, but it fits just as well with the story of Martha and Jesus at the tomb of Lazarus. In fact, several verses after today’s reading, Jesus tells Martha that “if you believe you will see the glory of God” (Jn 11:40).

That is to say, if we believe that Jesus is the resurrection and the life and that whoever believes in Him will never die, we will see that the dead are not really dead. Our eyes will be opened to the glory of a God who sustains life even after the decay of the physical body.

Prayer: Jesus, nurture my belief that I may see all the glories of the Lord.
