To the upright I will show the saving power of God. — Psalm 50:23
Mass Readings: Amos 5:14-15,21-24 / Matthew 8:28-34
O n a hot day I came upon an elderly friend just about to enter his bank. Realizing he was suffering from dehydration, I went into the building with him and asked an employee to get him a glass of water. Instead, the staff member glared at me and ushered the man away, suggesting I intended to rob him. He couldn’t believe anyone would sincerely offer charity to a fellow human being. I finally left, alone. Later, a friend of mine tried to persuade the manager by vouching for me. They still refused to believe.
After Jesus drove demons into pigs who jumped into the sea and drowned, the town’s fearful people begged Him to leave. In spite of the good He did, they refused to believe in His goodness. Are we so immersed in negativity that we forget how to love? Why do we treat those who are “different” with contempt?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, show me the unique goodness in everyone You created . . . including me!
