Help us with your right hand, O Lord, and answer us. — Psalm 60:7

Mass Readings: 2 Kings 17:5-8,13-15,18 / Matthew 7:1-5

Good Judgement

Before Mass one morning a young woman I didn’t know sat nearby with two small children. The mother’s clothing seemed inappropriate. In fact, she looked like she was on her way to a beach. I tried to refrain from mentally criticizing, but nonetheless, I wondered: Was she poor? Uninformed? Later, a friend introduced me to this family. They had escaped from their burning house that morning with only the clothes they wore. Now, before even seeking help for themselves, they came to thank God for sparing their lives. Remembering the pain when others misjudge me, I extended my hand and offered sympathy, a warm welcome and prayers.

Jesus says, “Stop judging, that you may not be judged.” Only God knows a person’s heart, mind, soul . . . and life circumstances.

Prayer: Lord, may I offer the same benefit of the doubt to others that I need, too.
