June 7, Monday Weekday

Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth. — Psalm 121:(see 2)

Mass Readings: 1 Kings 17:1-6 / Matthew 5:1-12

In Times of Trial

When a friend’s young daughter died, she mourned her loss with such violent grief that I thought she too might leave us. There was nothing I could say, nothing I could do , to ease her sorrow. No one could reverse the cause of that emotional pain by bringing the girl back to life. I reached out with sympathy, remembering the deaths of my own children, but my words and hugs weren’t enough.

One of the passages in the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount tells us, “Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted.” The entire discourse Jesus delivers is intended to give us hope and strength during times of trial. Eventually, the rain of tears on earth gives way to a smiling sun (we can better see the Son!), and heaven promises a better tomorrow.

Prayer: Holy Heart of Jesus, grant us comfort in our times of sorrow.
