Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. — Psalm 104:(see 30)
Mass Readings: Vigil: Genesis 11:1-9 or Exodus 19:3-8,16-20 or Ezekiel 37:1-14 or Joel 3:1-5 / Romans 8:22-27 / John 7:37-39; Day: Acts 2:1-11 / 1 Corinthians 12:3-7,12-13 or Romans 8:8-17 / John 20:19-23 or 14:15-16,23-26
Birthdays are times of great joy as we celebrate the lives of loved ones and encourage them as they enter into the adventure of another year. So it’s hardly surprising that we observe Pentecost with great fanfare, rejoicing on the Church’s “birthday,” when the Holy Spirit appeared to the disciple s as tongues of fire that rested on them.
Looking back, this day seems even more remarkable and its origins even more divine than it did then. How else can we explain the transformation of a small group of people cowering behind locked doors into evangelists eagerly spreading the Gospel — even in the face of persecution and death? How else to explain the billions of Christians around the world still living that faith?
Prayer: Holy Spirit, enliven my faith and make me eager to share it with others.
