All Is Yours

When my wife and I were married 20 years ago we pledged ourselves to the other. That included promises to love, honor, and cherish in good and bad times and to mutually share in whatever we have as a couple.

On the evening before His death, Jesus says something similar as He tells the Father that He prays for His disciples, “the ones You have given Me, because they are yours, and everything of mine is yours and everything of yours is mine” (Jn 17:9-10). That speaks strongly not only of the close bond between Jesus and the Father, but my place in that relationship. As a 21st century follower of Jesus, I too belong to them. That’s a good reminder for all those times when I belong instead to my possessions.

Prayer: Father, keep me mindful that because You are my source, I belong to You.
