May 5, Wednesday Easter Weekday

Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord.
— Psalm 122:(see 1)

Mass Readings: Acts 15:1-6 / John 15:1-8

Amazing Grace

Sometimes Church life seems so hard amid arguments about what our parish should do and what it means to be Catholic. It makes me long to live in the early Church. Jesus had lived only a few years earlier and the Apostles were right there. What a big, happy family it must have been.

Then, along comes a line like this from today’s first reading: “There arose no little dissension and debate” (Acts 15: 2). That reminds me that today’s disputes continue an age-old tradition in the Church. Rather than throw up my hands, I need to accept that disagreements will probably always be part of all this and, despite that, by God’s grace the Church survived and thrived. By God’s grace it will continue to do so, and so can I.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, continue to guide and shape my life and the life of Your Church.
