All you nations, praise the Lord.-- Psalm 87:117
Mass readings: Acts 11:19-26 / John 10:22-30
I am an avid reader of mysteries. I enjoy the suspense of trying to follow the author's clues, sorting out the ''red herrings'' from the important facts. Usually I'm very patient and keep reading on page by page even after I have a good idea who the murderer is. But I must confess that sometimes I can't resist and I peek at the ending to make sure I'm right.
In today's Gospel reading, the crowd demands: ''How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly.'' Unlike a mystery writer, Jesus offers no red herrings: ''The works I do in my Father's name testify to me.'' Changing water into wine, multiplying bread and fish, giving sight to the blind -- all these testify to Jesus as the Messiah.
Prayer: Messiah and Lord, help me to recognize the signs of Your presence in my life.
