The son of David will live for ever.-- Psalm 89:37
Mass readings: 2 Samuel 7:4-5,12-14,16 / Romans 4:13,16-18,22 / Matthew 1:16,18-21, 24 or Luke 2:41-51
Uncle Ronald sometimes speaks of his failings: his earlier resistance to change in his church and community; the times he was impatient with Aunt Jean, his wife of 57 years; his inability to always to be a model parent. Yet, three traits permeate my uncle's life: persevering faith, enduring character and deep humility. I marvel at Uncle Ronald's resilience, and how readily he says ''yes'' to life, especially as he embraces the changes that come with aging.
I marvel, also, at the way in which St. Joseph, our Lord's earthly father, readily said ''yes'' to God. Of course, St. Joseph was the model believer, citizen, husband and parent. Surely his ability to say ''yes'' grew out of the same qualities I've witnessed in Uncle Ronald's life: persevering faith, enduring character and deep humility.
Prayer: St. Joseph, watch over all husbands, fathers and sons. May they be faithful, humble men.
