January 28, St. Thomas Aquinas

The Lord God will give him the throne of David, his father.-- Luke 1:32

Mass readings: 2 Samuel 7:18-19,24-29 / Mark 4:21-25

Doctor for Our Times

St. Thomas Aquinas, whose memorial we celebrate today, was given the title of ''Angelic Doctor'' because he was not only a gifted thinker but he also excelled in virtue. The world is full of smart people who use their brilliant minds to improve life around us, but without virtue and a sound moral foundation, intelligence alone has the potential to lead us in disastrous directions. (The idea of human ''cloning,'' for example.)

The body of theological writings left by St. Thomas Aquinas still influences us today. His example of virtue is less known but it's said that God conferred upon him the gift of perfect chastity. We would do well to learn from St. Thomas, who persevered mightily in his vocation.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for St. Thomas and for his saintly example.
