The Lord hears the cry of the poor.-- Psalm 34:7
Mass readings: Zephaniah 3:1-2,9-13 / Matthew 21:28-32
''Truth or Consequences'' was a popular 1960s TV game show that featured contestants guessing if celebrities were being honest. A wrong answer brought some silly, but harmless results. Needless to say, in life that's not always the case. Consequences for what we do, or don't do, can be tremendously significant, and even painful. Zephaniah and Jesus speak of the consequences of false statements and teachings, which the Hebrews understood from their history. Our Lord talks about the need to be consistent in word and deed.
Too often we foolishly believe our actions will cause, at worst, ''game show'' troubles. That's why we need to hear the truth, recognize it, and act on it. It's Jesus -- the way, the truth, and the life -- who sets us free.
Prayer: Lord, help me always to be honest with myself and others.
