The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.-- Psalm 126:3
Mass readings: Baruch 5:1-9 / Philippians 1:4-6,8-11 / Luke 3:1-6
A generation ago it was common at popular music concerts to hear a ''warm-up'' group prepare the audience for the main attraction. The opening act got the people in the mood -- excited about what was to come -- but it wasn't the main event.
In a similar way, that was John the Baptist's role. Quoting Isaiah, he explains his purpose was to get people prepared to listen to and follow Jesus. John's exhortation must be our wake-up call to get ready for Christ's arrival. Our preparation in contemporary society is manifested in various ways, but it's our spiritual readiness that's most important. John's words are a call to action.
Prayer: Lord, help me to wake up and prepare for the coming of Your Son.
