The Lord upholds me.-- Psalm 3:6
Mass readings:1 Maccabees 2:15-29 / Luke 19:41-44
I was touched by this story of a caring four-year-old: A little boy visited an elderly neighbor who had lost his wife. Seeing the old man weeping, the boy climbed into his lap and sat there. Later, his mother asked what he had said to the man. The boy replied, ''Nothing. I just helped him to cry.''
The Bible records just two occasions on which Jesus wept: the death of Lazarus (John 11:35); and, in today's Gospel, over the refusal of Jerusalem to heed God's good news. One was a grieving over physical death; the other a grieving over spiritual death. I may weep tears of sadness, frustration, or anger when things go wrong for me or my family. But how often do I ''help'' God to cry over the things that grieve Him?
Prayer: Compassionate Lord, teach me to grieve over the things that break Your heart.
