November 13, St. Francis Xavier Cabrini

November 13, St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

The heavens proclaim the glory of God.-- Psalm 19:2

Mass readings: Wisdom 13:1-9 / Luke 17:26-37

Wise Ones

What characterizes a wise person: College degrees? Street-smarts? The ability to get things done? Knowing a lot? We live in the Internet age -- which is also the information age. Vast amounts of material, about practically anything, are available with just a few keystrokes. We are drowning in information. But are we really any wiser?

Today's first reading labels as ''foolish'' those who see the good and beautiful things God has created and yet fail to discern behind these things their Creator. Verse 9 questions the value of their knowledge, since this knowledge doesn't lead to a knowledge of God. The wise ones are those who view all of life from God's perspective. As the Scriptures remind us: ''The beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord'' (Prv 9:10).

Prayer: Eternal God, let me share Your perspective in all areas and issues of life.
