November 4, St. Charles Borromeo

Blessed the man who is gracious and lends to those in need. -- Psalm 112:5

Mass readings: Romans 13:8-10 / Luke 14:25-33

Costly Commitment

''Life is difficult.''That's how Scott Peck begins his bestseller ''The Road Less Travelled.'' He adds, ''. . . once we truly see this truth, we transcend it.''Peck comments that many have not accepted this truth -- and so, expecting life to be easy, they find it even more difficult.

Jesus warns the crowds that following Him will be difficult. He spells out the cost upfront, not in fine print (unlike many tobacco advertisements!). He spells out the demands of discipleship clearly, even harshly, with no sugar-coating. Jesus probably lost many followers as a result of this ''marketing strategy.'' But it was important to Jesus that those who decided to follow Him make an informed decision. Forewarned is forearmed. Being aware, beforehand, of the cost of a commitment helps us to remain faithful when the going gets tough.

Prayer: When I struggle to remain faithful, Crucified Christ, remind me of Your cross.
