October 7, Our Lady of the Rosary

Lord, you are merciful and gracious.-- Psalm 86:15

Mass readings: Jonah 4:1-11 / Luke 11:1-4

Lord, Teach Me

Notice in today's Gospel that Luke didn't say that, after Jesus taught the disciples to pray, they were all immediately great at praying. As with so many things in life, learning to pray takes practice. And practicing takes time and effort. Yes, it begins with information but it doesn't end there. (Here's another example: ''Doctor, help me lose weight.'' ''Eat less and exercise more.'' All done! Not quite.)

Today's Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is a good reminder that countless Catholics have found great comfort with this devotion. While others, no less devout, have struggled with it. It's been more of a chore than a delight. For some, learning to appreciate, rely on, and love the Rosary still takes some practicing. The Church assures us it's worth the effort.

Prayer: Our Lady of the Rosary, lead me to your Son.
