September 2, Wednesday Weekday

I trust in the mercy of God forever.--Psalm 52:10

Mass readings: Colossians 1:1-8 / Luke 4:38-44

On Call, 24/7

Did Jesus ever get a good night's sleep? Gospel stories like today's make it seem doubtful. After the healing of Simon Peter's mother-in-law, there was a parade of desperate visitors pushing into that little house in Capernaum. Every person had a story and a need. The compassionate Lord Jesus listened patiently and prayed. Then, as Luke tells us ''he laid his hands on each of them and cured them.''

Today, the resurrected Jesus still listens to the unending prayers and pleadings of people from all over our big world. And Jesus still heals and answers prayers. We are the brothers and sisters He came to rescue. Jesus is also present, of course, in the Eucharist. Even more available than He was for the people of His own day, today Jesus is on call 24/7.

Prayer: Jesus, though I can't see You physically, strengthen my faith that You are never far.
