June 8, Monday Weekday

Taste and see the goodness of the Lord.--Psalm 34:9

Mass readings: 2 Corinthians 1:1-7 / Matthew 5:1-12

The Year of St. Paul

Today's first reading begins a series from Paul's Second Letter to the Corinthians that will last for two weeks. They're worth our attention, especially as the Church's Year of St. Paul draws to a close at the end of this month. In just the few verses we hear today, so much of Paul's rich thinking and dazzling faith is clear: the centrality of Christ, the important place of suffering, the way his prayer is woven seamlessly into his preaching.

It's a good time to take stock. What efforts have I made to get to know Paul better over the past 12 months? Have I allowed myself to be formed by his teaching? Perhaps some extra time with his writings over the next few weeks would be a good way to bring this special year to a close.

Prayer: St. Paul, apostle of Christ Jesus, pray for me!
