Blessed the God, who lives forever.-- Tobit 13:1
Mass readings: Tobit 12:1,5-15,20 / Mark 12:38-44
The Can Man (as our kids call him) comes through our neighborhood on a bicycle once a week when the garbage is set along the street for pick-up. He scrounges for recyclable cans, for which you can get five cents each in our state. By his demeanor and his appearance, it's clear that he needs the money.
Long ago, we decided we could help the Can Man by collecting our cans in a bag, so that he can get all we have and he needn't go through our garbage. He knocks on our door each week, and we hand him the bag personally, along with a friendly greeting, and chat for a bit. Almsgiving, Raphael tells Tobit today, ''expiates every sin.'' And I could use some of that! Consider: How might I ''give alms'' today?
Prayer: Father, be the comfort and protector of the poor.
