May 8, Friday Easter Weekday

You are my Son: this day I have begotten you.  -- Psalm 2:7

Mass readings: Acts 13:26-33 / John 14:1-6

Trust Versus Worry

Worry isn't about reason but, rather, about allowing the future or the past to control me. ''We have to fight them daily, like fleas, those many small worries about the morrow, for they sap our energies,'' wrote Etty Hillesum (who died in a Nazi concentration camp). ''The things that have to be done must be done, and for the rest we must not allow ourselves to become infested with thousands of petty fears and worries, so many motions of no confidence in God.''

When Jesus says in today's Gospel, ''Do not let your hearts be troubled,'' He reminds me that I have a choice. I can be weighed down by the past. I can become overwhelmed with the future (the ''what ifs).'' Or I can focus on the goodness and blessings God has waiting for me in this present.

Prayer: My Father, help me to trust You completely, without reservations.
