Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord!--Psalm 119:1
Mass readings: Deuteronomy 26:16-19 / Matthew 5:43-48
During my time in the convent (I was a sister for many years), there was one member of the congregation whose very presence filled me with fear. For a long time those emotions stayed on my back like the proverbial monkey until one day, after I had left, I met up with her again. I felt moved to go to her, smile, and inquire about her health. We had a friendly conversation and the ''monkey'' hopped off.
There's an old saying that advises ''love your enemy -- it will drive him crazy!'' Not quite Jesus' words, but it has the same effect. Love throws the enemy into confusion. Hatred and anger are understandable and can be dealt with. Love is something you can't fight. What a message, both for me personally and for our world.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, teach me the healing power of love toward those I fear or dislike.
