The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want.-- Psalm 23:1
Mass readings: Hebrews 13:15-17, 20-21 / Mark 6:30-34
In some dioceses, parish laity are asked to describe the priest they would like as their next pastor. In most cases, the requests are pretty similar. An astute administrator, a strong leader who is also flexible and open-minded, a good listener, a wise mediator, and a sensible delegator. An easygoing, congenial personality. Good with youth, as well as being approachable, understanding, pastoral, up to date, well-read, creative, and witty. An inspiring (but brief) homilist. Also . . . and also . . . .
Today's first reading tells us we're to help our leaders ''fulfill their task with joy and not sorrow.'' One good way is not to expect Father to register five-plus stars in everything on the list. Only the Almighty, Eternal Father does that.
Prayer: Father, let us be realistic -- and bring joy -- to our leaders.
