Here I am, Lord; I come to do your will.--Psalm 40:8 and 9
Mass readings: Isaiah 49:3, 5-6 / 1 Corinthians 1:1-3 / John 1:29-34
The story's told of a little boy, having long-coveted the part of ''Joseph,'' was bitterly disappointed at being chosen as ''innkeeper'' in the Sunday school Christmas play. He kept wondering how to wriggle his way into the limelight. Finally, he had an idea! On the day of the performance, ''Joseph'' knocked at the door. The young innkeeper -- instead of barking ''No room!'' -- beamed, and cried, ''Come in! You shall have my best room. And I will get you some hot water and a hot meal, too!''
Quite a different drama is played out in today's Gospel. John the Baptist not only accepts a ''second-fiddle'' role, but very definitely and deliberately turns the spotlight on Jesus. How about us? Do we scramble for a place in the spotlight or do we keep the spotlight trained steadily on Jesus?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, help me always to stand in the shadows, shining the spotlight on You.
