Lord, this is the people that longs to see your face.-- Psalm 24:(see 6)
Mass readings: Hebrews 10:19-25 / Mark 4:21-25
In today's Gospel, Jesus points out the futility of covering up a light. The gifts of the Holy Spirit can shine through us, but not if they're buried under a blanket of false modesty or fear.
I'm reminded of the time my sister and I went on a commercial sailboat. I couldn't wait to swim -- as we'd been promised -- in the bay while we anchored for lunch. At lunchtime, nobody made a move, so I held back. My sister's not a swimmer, but she had wanted to try the sailing in spite of some apprehension. She had refused to let fear hold her back. Inspired, I jumped in the bay. Soon, others joined me. My sister's courage lit the way for me. My joy shined for others. Who might be waiting for your little light to shine?
Prayer: Holy Spirit, shine through me today.
