January 3, Most Holy Name of Jesus

All the ends of the earth have seen the saving power of God. -- Psalm 98:3

Mass readings: 1 John 2:29--3:6 / John 1:29-34

What's in a Name?

Jesus is called ''the Lamb of God'' in today's Gospel, but not only is He the lamb, He's also the Good Shepherd. He's the awe-inspiring King of Kings and the intimately loving Bridegroom. Many images describe the Son of Man Who is also the indescribable Son of God.

When Moses asked God His name, God simply answered, ''I AM.'' Further description limits God in some way. And yet, we humans can't take in an infinite God with our finite minds. So Jesus, the Alpha and the Omega, became one of us. We're free to call on Him, naming whatever image of Him we need at any point in time: Savior, Friend, Good Shepherd, Lamb of God, Prince of Peace, and more.

Prayer: Blessed be the name of Jesus!
