December 29, Fifth Day, Christmas Octave

Let the heavens be glad and the earth rejoice!-- Psalm 96:11

Mass readings:1 John 2:3-11 / Luke 2:22-35

Thank You, Mother!

In my childhood days my mother often said, ''A mother is a person not to lean on, but a person to make leaning unnecessary.'' Now I realize how true that has been in my life! As I grew up, in times of sickness or health, pain or joy, failure or success, my mother lovingly accompanied me. Her continual supporting presence played a vital role in shaping me.

In today's Gospel, Mary plays the beautiful role of just such a mother as she accompanies Joseph in presenting her beloved Son to God in the temple. As the prophet Simeon announces the future destination of the child, those words pierce her heart. Even so, as a faithful disciple she never falters in walking with her Son in accomplishing the will of God.

Prayer: Lord, richly bless all mothers.
