December 28, Feast of the Holy Family

Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways. --Psalm 128:(see 1)

Mass readings: Sirach 3:2-7,12-14 or Genesis 15:1-6;21:1-3 / Colossians 3:12-21 or 3:12-17 or Hebrews 11:8,11-12,17-19 / Luke 2:22-40 or 2:22,39-40

Called to Be 'Holy Families'

Today's Gospel recounts the mysterious events surrounding Jesus when He was presented at the temple as required by Mosaic Law. We learn, too that, the child grew to maturity filled with wisdom, and the family of Joseph and Mary played a central role in bringing up Jesus in the knowledge of God.

Perhaps more than ever, the Holy Family is a model for us to imitate in this world of broken families and relationships. I'm reminded of the time I visited a friend of mine who lived in a ramshackle house with no facilities. But the love, warmth, joy and companionship the family members shared among themselves made up for the lack of amenities. Seeing this absolutely happy family I could say God's favor was with them. They, too, were a ''holy family.''

Prayer: Jesus, Mary and Joseph, help all families who are facing challenges today.
