December 21, Fourth Sunday of Advent

Forever I will sing the goodness of the Lord.-- Psalm 89:2

Mass readings: 2 Samuel 7:1-5,8-12,14,16 / Romans 16:25-27 / Luke 1:26-38

The God of Surprises

In today's Gospel the angel tells Mary that she's going to become the mother of Jesus. Mary is puzzled -- this simple girl cannot make sense of this supernatural message -- but surrenders herself totally to God and lets God steer the course of her life.

Once my superior told me that he was looking for someone to go on a very difficult mission. Not knowing what it was and without thinking twice I said that I was ready and willing. Then to my great surprise, he told me that it was time I took a break and go on a holiday, as I hadn't had one for almost three years. When we surrender to God unconditionally we let God make an entry into our lives and unfold the mystery of His life-giving love.

Prayer: Lord, help me surrender myself to Your will unconditionally all the days of my life.
