Create a clean heart in me, O God.--Psalm 51:12
Mass readings: Jeremiah 31:31-34 / Matthew 16:13-23
Today's Gospel shows Peter at his best and at his worst. Good Peter: He's the only disciple to figure out (or be willing to say out loud) that Jesus is ''the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.'' Bad Peter: He immediately tries to prevent Jesus from doing something Jesus has to do and so Jesus rebukes him harshly.
Like many others, I name Peter my favorite apostle. He's a recognizable human character, reacting instinctively to what he hears from Jesus. Sometimes he's off the mark (most people like that about him) but other times his instincts are right on target. He's passionate. He loves Jesus. He throws everything he has into being a disciple. I would like to have a big dose of Peter's spirit.
Prayer: Peter, help me to follow Jesus with the zeal you showed.
