The house of Israel trusts in the Lord.--Psalm 115:9
Mass readings: Hosea 8:4-7,11-13 / Matthew 9:32-38
While today's first reading shows God's anger at Israel's disobedience, the Gospel reading depicts His persistent care for them. We hear that Jesus' heart ''was moved with pity'' for His people, ''because they were troubled and abandoned, like sheep without a shepherd'' (Mt 9:36). I raise sheep so this image makes sense to me. I can't count the times I've found one with its head lodged in the fence, pushing forward with all its strength, and unable to back up into freedom.
Fortunately, sheep will bleat at the top of their lungs when stuck, and so rarely remain that way for long. And our faithful Shepherd, God, is infinitely more tender and forgiving with us. He's more than willing to pull us out of our sins -- if we will just bleat for His help.
Prayer: Lord God, please forgive us; pull us from the sins we trap ourselves in!
