The Lord has chosen Zion for his dwelling.--Psalm 132:13
Mass readings: 2 Kings 11:1-4,9-18,20 / Matthew 6:19-23
I had a blue sports jacket that I really liked but it sat in the back of my closet for a long time because it no longer fit me. I promised myself I would lose weight and, eventually, I did get back to that size. When I triumphantly unzipped the storage bag and took out my coat I was horrified by the sight. It looked like a large, blue piece of Swiss cheese. Moths had feasted on it.
I read today's Gospel with that vivid image in mind. ''Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and decay destroy.'' Instead, disciples are to carry on the work of the Gospel here on earth and, by doing so, store up treasure in heaven, where our most merciful God will surely give it to us.
Prayer: Most merciful Father, give us hearts eager for reward in heaven rather than on earth.
