O Lord, great peace have they who love your law.-- Psalm 119:165
Mass readings: 2 Timothy 3:10-17 / Mark 12:35-37
Born to German nobility, Norbert (c. 1080-1134) was raised amid the splendor of the royal court and -- in his youth -- was always ready for a good time. As many sons of nobility did, he took minor orders (up to subdeacon) out of worldly motives: social prominence and financial rewards. A near fatal accident worked a miraculuous change in Norbert, who responded to the voice of the Lord speaking to his heart, ''Turn from evil and do good. Seek peace and pursue it.''
He embraced prayer and penance, gave his wealth to the poor, and was ordained a priest. Even when he was ordained a bishop, he continued to embrace poverty. Legend has it the porter refused to let Norbert into the bishop's residence, assuming he was a beggar.
Prayer: St. Norbert, you built up riches in heaven. Inspire us to imitate you.
